OCEANUS SEMINAR SERIES 27 SET

Oceanus Seminar Series | Puri Veiga | 27 Sep | 12h
Title: Mussel beds: much more than seafood
Name: Puri Veiga (CIIMAR)
Abstract: Mytilus galloprovincialis is an ecologically and economically relevant species. It is very abundant in the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula where is harvested in natural systems and/or cultured intensively on rafts. Aquaculture production is dependent on their abundance in natural environments because juveniles are collected in rocky shores and then attached to ropes on rafts. Moreover, it is considered an ecosystem engineer because it provides habitat for many species and enhances biodiversity. At this seminar, the effects of different anthropogenic disturbances such as urbanisation or harvesting on the biodiversity associated with mussels will be assessed.
