Title: Detection of toxigenic cyanobacteria and their toxins by multi- approach methods in a Cuban estuary

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are increasing in frequency, distribution, severity in different regions throughout the world. Blooms of cyanobacteria have negative effects on aquatic organisms and even on human health, since many species can synthesize potent toxins. Surveillance of the aquatic ecosystems is therefore obligatory, and methods to achieve such require a prompt answer not only regarding the species that are producing the blooms but also the cyanotoxins that are being produced and/or released.

This seminar will focus on different approaches based on morphological-based identification and novel molecular-based methods for the identification of toxic cyanobacterial species from environmental samples from a Cuban estuary.
