Title: Cyanobacterial bioactive metabolites for anticancer drug discovery

Name: Maria Lígia Sousa

Cyanobacteria are versatile microorganisms that ubiquitously inhabit earth, as they adapt to external threats by producing secondary metabolites.
Extracts and pure compounds from cyanobacterial strains of LEGE-CC, hosted at CIIMAR, were studied regarding their cytotoxicity and antitumoral activity on multicellular culture systems. Such system is a physiologically more representative of a real tumour, therefore, interesting to characterize effects and mechanisms of actions of compounds, and to screen for new compounds.
We aimed to increase the knowledge on cyanobacterial secondary metabolites applications and their importance to the society and demonstrate that using in vitro models we can approximate laboratory results to in vivo situations and hopefully help to increase the success on drug discovery in the future.
