NEPTUNE SEMINAR SERIES | Naroa Lopez-Herguedas and Belén González-Gaya | 27 MAY |11h30
Title: Hospital waters: health or environment?
Name: Naroa Lopez-Herguedas and Belén González-Gaya
The release of an unknown number of chemicals from hospital effluents is nowadays overloading wastewater treatment plants, designed for the elimination of organic matter. The unremoved substances include pharmaceuticals, disinfectants and other chemicals, which may affect aquatic ecosystems. The aim of our work is to disentangle their effects in the environment combining biological and chemical tools. An Effect Directed Analysis allows the identification of the toxic compounds present by several bioassays; zebra fish and sea urchin embryo tests, yeast estrogen screening and obesogenic activity (the latter performed at CIIMAR) of the fractionated samples, obtained by semipreparative liquid chromatography (LC). The identification of the more hazardous compounds will be done by target/suspect screening with LC-MS (Orbitrap).
