Title: Algal-bacterial interactions in brown algal “model” systems

In this talk, I will give an overview of our ongoing efforts to study the roles and mechanisms of algal-bacterial interaction in the small filamentous brown alga Ectocarpus as well as the kelp Saccharina latissima. The talk will touch on multi-omics approaches to generate hypotheses on the role of bacterial symbionts during the stress response, on the usefulness of metabolic networks and their complementarities to predict potential interactions, but also the challenges we are facing to control co-culture experiments and the complexity potentially added by the activity of viruses.
