Title: Ancient DNA, a glimpse into the past.
Name: Paula Campos
Ancient DNA rose to scientific attention in 1984 when Higuchi et al. amplified 229bp of mitochondrial DNA from a 140 year-old skin from an extinct quagga (Equus quagga). This work demonstrated for the first time that it is possible to obtain genetic data directly from the past to address evolutionary, taxonomic and ecological questions. Since then, a lot has happened in the ancient DNA world and we have moved from sequencing just a few bp of DNA to sequencing entire genomes, the palaeogenomic era. In this talk I will guide you through some of the fascinating, significant and unique contributions ancient DNA has made in the field of evolutionary biology.
