Ocean Clean Day

The “Ocean Clean Day” initiative takes place on June 8, organized by the project partner Associação Pró - Maior and is part of the NetTag project of CIIMAR- UP.

The OceanCleanDay event takes place on the WorldOceanDay during the 8th of June fishing journey  and aims to raise public awareness of the origin of marine litter and its prevention and collection.

How does the event take place?

Fishing vessels will leave the Port of Póvoa do Varzim and voluntarily collect marine litter from the nets and their fishing activity. All garbage collection will be brought to Porto da Póvoa where the CIIMAR-UP team of researchers from the NetTag project will begin its role of quantifying and sort the garbage collected without any items being lost or discarded during the entire process.

The NetTag project has a prominent communication component, which highlights fisherman's awareness actions through associations such as the Associação Pró - Maior, a group of citizens recognized by the project as a relevant and voluntary hand in garbage collection adrift in the oceans.
