SPECIAL OCEANUS SEMINAR SERIES 21 OCTOBER

OCEANUS SEMINAR SERIES | Mari Heggernes Eilertsen | 21 OCT | 11h30

Title: Chemosynthesis-based ecosystems in the Arctic deep sea

Name: Mari Heggernes Eilertsen (Department of Biological Sciences and Centre for Deep Sea Research, University of Bergen (Norway))

Hydrothermal vents, cold seeps and organic falls are unique ecosystems in the deep-sea where primary production is performed by chemosynthetic microorganisms. These ecosystems are rich in nutrients in an otherwise oligotrophic deep sea, and many of the organisms living there are highly specialized. In the Arctic, chemosynthesis-based ecosystems host a fauna which is distinct from that found in other oceans. The presentation will highlight some of the recent advances in understanding these ecosystems, and how they may be affected by anthropogenic disturbances in the future.

The seminar will take place at CIIMAR headquarters (Boca da Baleia Auditorium).
