OCEANUS SEMINAR SERIES | Konrad Viehrig | 16 NOV | 11:30
Title: Heterologous Expression of Cryptic Natural Product Genes
Automated annotation of microbial genome sequences has revealed a vast amount of predicted biosynthetis gene clusters (BGCs) whose products are not yet known. Besides the conventional "grind and find" approach to discover new compounds from their original producer, the cloning and heterologous expression of such BGCs is increasingly applied for the disovery novel natural products. This approach is particularly interesting for cyanobacterial BGCs where cultivation and targeted mutagenesis of the original producer are rarely a feasible option. In this talk, I will briefly present BGC mining and refactoring strategies and provide examples from my former work.
About: Konrad Viehrig is a molecular biologist and has worked on natural product discovery and biosynthesis studies in Myxobacteria and Streptomycetes, as well as yeast synthetic biology. He joined Pedros group in CIIMAR as a postdoc to apply pathway cloning and enzymology for the discovery and biosynthesis elucidation of cyanobacterial natural products.
The seminar will take place at CIIMAR headquarters (Boca da Baleia Auditorium).
