Title: Algal biotechnology in Colombia
The Algae Culture Laboratory of the National University of Colombia is a research group for the knowledge of the diversity of algae and cyanobacteria, as well as their multiple applications and uses, in Colombia. It has the LAUN collection, the first specialized in these microorganisms and with the endorsement of the Ministry of the Environment. Research projects have been carried out in physiology of growth and development, wastewater bioremediation, heavy metal treatment, search for cytotoxic secondary metabolites, third-generation biofuels, and food production for animals and humans. Currently, a new line of work on cyanotoxins and their diagnosis in water for human consumption has begun.
Name: Luis Montenegro
Dr. Luis Carlos Montenegro, a biologist by profession, is an associate professor at the National University of Colombia for more than 20 years, coordinates the Algae Culture Laboratory and is the curator of the LAUN Collection. His research area is in the physiology of cryptogams (algae and bryophytes), delving into biotechnology and industrial uses of these organisms. He has dedicated the last few years to promoting algal and cyanobacterial research in his country.
The seminar will take place at CIIMAR headquarters (Boca da Baleia Auditorium).
