The Algae Culture Laboratory of the National University of Colombia is a research group for the knowledge of the diversity of algae and cyanobacteria, as well as their multiple applications and uses, in Colombia. It has the LAUN collection, the first specialized in these microorganisms and with the endorsement of the Ministry of the Environment. Research projects have been carried out in physiology of growth and development, wastewater bioremediation, heavy metal treatment, search for cytotoxic secondary metabolites, third-generation biofuels, and food production for animals and humans. Currently, a new line of work on cyanotoxins and their diagnosis in water for human consumption has begun.
