The TREC expedition stop at CIIMAR will include a series of free activities for schools and the general public from the 26th to the 30th of October.
TREC – PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMME
BEACH CLEAN-UP
The TREC expedition's public engagement programme in Porto begins with a beach clean-up. By cleaning marine litter and protecting coastal habitats, participants will be able to contribute to the environmental conservation of our coastline.
The activity is being held in collaboration with CIIMAR's MAELSTROM project.

GUIDED TOURS
One of the most captivating aspects of this expedition lies in the opportunity to learn a little more about the science behind it and the different infrastructures that make up this great expedition. To facilitate this, the programme includes a day of guided tours for school groups, providing them with insights into CIIMAR, the Advanced Mobile Lab (EMBL), and the Tara Schooner (Tara Ocean Foundation).
1. CIIMAR
A visit to CIIMAR introduces visitors to diverse research areas in marine and environmental sciences. This tour provides insights into innovative research topics and techniques developed at CIIMAR.
2. Advanced Mobile Lab (AML)
By the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).
During the interactive guided tour to the Advanced Mobile Lab, visitors will be introduced to its advanced mobile services and will have the opportunity to closely observe several mini-experiments conducted using the lab's equipment.
3. Tara Schooner
By the Tara Ocean Foundation.
A visit to the 36-meter-long Tara Schooner unveils a floating laboratory that has already covered an impressive 500,000 km journey (and it’s not finished yet!). The Tara Schooner operates as the expedition's main at-sea infrastructure.

SCIENCE ON TOUR
If you've always wanted to interact with scientists in a more casual setting, then this is your chance. Science on Tour is a lively science discussion event for the public, where TREC and broader scientific topics are explored interactively. Questions are highly encouraged!
The event is being hosted in partnership with Café Ceuta.

SCIENCE ACTIVITIES
Get ready for an exciting science activities lineup in the scope of the TREC expedition!
CIIMAR will lead a series of activities dedicated to exploring its three primary research areas: Marine Biotechnology, Global Changes and Ecosystem Services, and Biology, Aquaculture, and Seafood Quality. Over the weekend, the Tara Ocean Foundation will host workshops to delve into topics such as the marine microbiome and plastic pollution. On Monday, EMBL will introduce Nexus Island, an interactive game-based workshop centered on planetary health.
The event is organised in partnership with the Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto (MHNC-UP).

TREC IN THE CITY

EXHIBITION "MICROBIOME, INVISIBLE BIODIVERSITY OF THE OCEAN"

Explore the world of marine microorganisms with the exhibition “Microbiome, Invisible Biodiversity of The Ocean”. This engaging display showcases the vital role these tiny creatures play in our Ocean and the planet's health."
The exhibition is organised in partnership with CMIA Matosinhos.

TREC – PROGRAMA DE ATIVIDADES COM O PÚBLICO
LIMPEZA DE PRAIA
O programa de atividades com o público da Expedição TREC no Porto inicia com uma limpeza de praia. Os participantes poderão contribuir para a conservação ambiental, removendo lixo marinho e preservando as áreas costeiras.
A atividade é realizada em colaboração com o projeto MAELSTROM do CIIMAR.

VISITAS GUIADAS
Uma das particularidades mais interessantes desta expedição é a possibilidade de ficar a conhecer um bocadinho mais sobre a ciência que está por trás dela e as diferentes infraestruturas que compõem esta grande expedição. Por isso, o programa inclui um dia de visitas guiadas ao CIIMAR, ao Laboratório Móvel (EMBL) e ao veleiro Tara (Tara Ocean Foundation).
1. CIIMAR
Uma visita ao CIIMAR dá a conhecer aos visitantes diversas áreas de investigação em ciências marinhas e ambientais. Esta visita permite conhecer temas e técnicas de investigação inovadores desenvolvidos no CIIMAR.
2. Laboratório Móvel
Pelo Laboratório Europeu de Biologia Molecular (EMBL).
Durante a visita guiada ao Laboratório Móvel do EMBL os visitantes serão apresentados aos seus serviços móveis avançados e terão a oportunidade de observar de perto várias mini-experiências realizadas com o equipamento do laboratório.
3. Veleiro Tara
Pela Fundação Tara Ocean.
Uma visita ao veleiro Tara, que tem 36 metros de comprimento, revela um laboratório flutuante que já percorreu uma impressionante viagem de 500 000 km (e ainda não está terminada!). O veleiro Tara representa a principal infraestrutura da expedição no mar.

ATIVIDADES CIENTÍFICAS
Prepara-te para uma série de atividades científicas no âmbito da expedição TREC!
O CIIMAR irá apresentar uma série de atividades dedicadas à exploração das suas três principais linhas de investigação: Alterações Globais e Serviços dos Ecossistemas, Biotecnologia Marinha, e Biologia, Aquacultura e Qualidade dos Produtos do Mar. Durante o fim de semana, a Tara Ocean Foundation organizará workshops para aprofundar temas como o microbioma marinho e a poluição por plástico. Já na segunda-feira, o EMBL apresentará a Nexus Island, um workshop interativo, sobre a saúde planetária.
O evento é organizado em parceria com o Museu de História Natural e da Ciência da Universidade do Porto (MHNC-UP).
