Title:

Deep sea mining and Law: present and future outlooks

Name:

Rui Ferreira (CIIMAR)

ABSTRACT:

Deep-sea mining is an economic activity expected to have considerable environmental impacts on the marine environment. It also presents specific scientific and technical challenges which need to be considered by Law. At the international level, Regulations regarding prospecting and exploration activities taking place in the “Area” already exist and Regulations for exploitation activities are expected to be ready in the near future. Some States are also updating their own legal framework in order to better prepare for this activity. The seminar approaches the present regulatory status of deep-sea mining at the international level and points out issues which need to be addressed for proper decision-making, with an emphasis on the effective protection of the marine environment.
