The existence of chemicals that disrupt the lipid homeostasis (obesogens) is well established. However, the taxonomic extent of this phenomenon is still unknown. Since most of these compounds reach the aquatic ecosystems in a significant amount is essential to understand the impact in aquatic organisms. The action of the obesogens is usually mediated by nuclear receptors. Using the model obesogen tributyltin (TBT) and employing in vivo and in vitro approaches we evaluated the taxonomic scope of this obesogen, revealing the vulnerability in non-vertebrate animals and the role of the nuclear receptors PPAR and RXR in this response.
