The medal of scientific merit was delivered by the European Commissioner for Investigation, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas, and the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, at the Meeting with Science and Technology in Portugal - Science Meeting 2018, held at the Lisbon Congress Center.

The Scientific Merit Medal usually distinguishes Portuguese or foreign personalities who have contributed to the development of science or scientific culture in Portugal. This recognition to João Coimbra awards his professional career and in particular his fundamental contribution in teaching and research at ICBAS and as one of the founders of CIIMAR-UP.
