Yesterday CIIMAR witnessed a red tide near its headquarters, Porto de Leixões and Matosinhos beach. The bloom of the species Noticula scintillans created a light show over the waves during the low tide in the evening.

Noctiluca scintillans is a dinoflagellate that exhibits bioluminescence. These blooms result from the contact of warmer and saline waters with adjacent cooler waters rich in nutrients.
