The study concludes that there has been a drastic decrease in the genetic diversity of the Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus) in the last 200 years. This loss of genetic diversity can threaten the survival of this species.

 

The work of an international team of scientists led by CIIMAR researcher Paula Campos, collected historical samples, from natural history collections, and modern samples of this species.
