Wrack vs Sea Litter on the beaches of northern Portugal

The study “Spatio-Temporal Variability of Anthropogenic and Natural Wrack Accumulations along the Driftline: Marine Litter Overcomes Wrack in the Northern Sandy Beaches of Portugal” conducted by CIIMAR researchers Laura Guerrero-Meseguer, Puri Veiga and Marcos Rubal and published in the international journal Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, provides the first data on the deposition of wrack and marine litter on the sandy beaches of Northern Portugal and shows that the depositions of marine litter considerably exceed the amount of wrack. The total weight of marine litter can be up to four times higher than the total weight of wrack, especially during the winter.
