Following the application submitted through the Interdisciplinary Centre for Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Porto (CIIMAR-UP), the University of Porto was awarded a UNESCO Chair on Ocean Expert, dedicated to research and literacy in the oceans.

 

The Chair "Ocean Expert - Science Education of Children for Ocean Stewardship: in Support of the Sustainable Ocean Economy", acts as a partnership tool with UNESCO to promote an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation on Ocean science education, Ocean literacy and sustainable economy of marine resources, three major missions of CIIMAR supported by the transversal role of the University of Porto.

 

Submitted through the efforts of CIIMAR's team of researchers with sensitivity and experience in education for science led by Laura Guimarães and further comprised of Marisa Almeida, Francisco Arenas, Marina Dolbeth and Filipe Castro, this Chair will facilitate collaboration between researchers of the highest level as well as internationally recognized teaching staff both at the University of Porto, other institutions in Portugal, as well as elsewhere in Europe, and the world.
