Causalities between diversity, ecosystem functions and services in marine ecosystems
This project aims to address causalities involving biodiversity, ecosystem functions and services (ES) in coastal marine ecosystems; and to understand how their changes affect ecosystem resilience. The role of functional diversity as potential indicator of ES will be tested, as well as used to assess disturbance effects in the studied systems. We will gather data through monitoring programs and compared it with baseline information to understand long-term changes regarding socioeconomic development and their consequent impacts. Trait analyses will focus on a multi-trophic approach, which enhances the possibility of successfully describing and predicting ES. In addition, local ecological knowledge, provided by regional stakeholders, will be combined with ES evaluation, to obtain recommendations for an integrated management as a way to enhance human well-being without compromising the environment.
