  Marine Biotechnology

  Research topics include the investigation of the richness of Ocean resources for the discovery and characterization of new bioactive compounds with ecological, pharmaceutical or other industrial applications. The study of emerging toxins, development of biosensors for early detection systems, and development of bioremediation and phytoremediation tools for ecosystem recovery are other main goals of this research line.

    The objectives of Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry Group are the search for new compounds with potential biological and pharmacological properties from marine biodiversity, design and synthesis of novel compounds based on marine natural products scaffolds, determination of biophysicochemical parameters and study of their mechanisms of action on cellular and molecular targets related to antimicrobial activity, tumorigenesis, inflammation and blood coagulation, and development of antifouling agents as well as efficient methodologies for isolation, synthesis and analysis of chiral compounds. Our strategies are to obtain novel compounds based on innovative marine bioproducts which can be exploited for their potential in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries.
