Alejandra Mejia Saenz de Tejada
Alejandra graduated as a biologist in Guatemala in 2019. In 2021, she completed an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree in Marine Environment and Resources at the Universities of Southampton (UK), the Basque Country (ES) and Liege (BE). During her MSc, she became interested in deep-sea ecology, particularly in benthic ecosystems susceptible to anthropogenic activities.
Currently, she is a PhD candidate at University of Porto and a laCaixa INPhINIT fellow. Her research combines the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) and video annotation techniques to study the occurrence of deep-sea corals and sponges known to form Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VME) in the Atlantic Ocean.
